Primary Location: Flexible - working from home or at UNSW Sydney
Employment Status: Casual - an anticipated 5-10 hours per week
Migrant Justice Institute (MJI) is looking to engage a data analyst to support our work to address migrant worker exploitation, following our survey of 10,000 temporary migrants working in Australia.
Overview
In 2024, MJI conducted a national survey on migrants’ experiences of modern slavery and wage theft with 10,000 valid responses – the largest of its kind in the world. Over the next 18 months we will publish our findings in national and global reports that will influence policy and business practices to better protect migrant workers.
We are now looking for a statistician/data analyst for around 5-10 hours/week to undertake data analysis, with immediate start. We anticipate work until end of 2025 and possibly through 2026. The work can be undertaken remotely.
Responsibilities
This role reports to our Co-Executive Directors, and will also work closely with our Research Assistants. Responsibilities include:
Creating new variables and undertaking statistical analyses, including crosstabulation
Replicating simple regressions based on work by previous analysts
Managing the Qualtrics data interface and dataset
Required Capabilities & Qualifications
This role would suit a doctoral student or Honours student in data sciences, statistics, economics, or similar field, who wants to do highly impactful social justice work. If the candidate is also in the advanced stages of a degree in law, this work could be combined with research assistance.
Essential:
Proficient in R, or ability and willingness to learn R with expertise in another statistical program (Python, Stata etc)
Impeccable attention to detail including identifying errors
Highly organised, including managing data files used by others
Strong communication skills, including explaining complex information to non-analyst team members
Flexible disposition and some flexibility in availability
Desirable:
Ability to create engaging data visualisations
Social policy background (eg: economics)
Work experience in any field (can be alongside studies)
Curiosity and interest in understanding data findings and providing insights and identifying potential further lines of inquiry
